How domain transfers work

A simple guide to domain transfer locks, authorization codes and transfer delays.

Basic transfer steps

  1. Unlock the domain at the current registrar.
  2. Get the authorization code, also called EPP code.
  3. Start transfer at the new registrar.
  4. Approve confirmation emails if required.
  5. Wait for completion.

Why transfers get delayed

  • Domain is less than 60 days old or recently transferred.
  • Transfer lock is still enabled.
  • Authorization code is wrong or expired.
  • Registrant email is inaccessible.
  • Domain has expired or is in redemption status.
Before transferring: Confirm whether DNS will remain active during the transfer. A transfer should not break your website or email if DNS is handled correctly.
